Based on extensive positive preclinical results, Celladon Corporation and its academic collaborators initiated the Phase 1/2 dose escalation CUPID clinical trial of the SERCA2a gene administered directly to heart cells with minimally invasive cardiac catheterization. The Cupid study represents the first-in-human trial of gene therapy in heart failure using AAV. One-year Phase 2 results demonstrate that restoring SERCA2a enzyme production provides sustained improvements in ventricular function and multiple cardiac parameters in patients with advanced heart failure.
